Baking supplies at Phoon Huat Singapore

October 17, 2016 By: Preeti Khichacomment

Lately, I have seen some insanely well decorated cakes on shop windows, instagram pages and birthday parties. As a novice, I have always wanted to know how people come up with these really cool creations.

To learn more about baking, and hoping to try my hand at it someday, I find myself at Phoon Huat, a popular baking supplies chain in Singapore. I visit the outlet at 171 Bencoolen Street. The perfect start to a Monday morning!

Phoon Huat feels like walking through a grocery store, albeit for ‘all things baking’. I slowly wander through aisles, educating myself on the different supplies in the store. The kind sales lady at the store is super helpful, answering my most ‘basic’ questions on baking.

They seem to have a fair collection of supplies, from basic cake border tip sets, pastry bags, to icing nozzles. An entire section is also devoted to baking tools like icing smoothers, fondant trimmers, drizzling, dipping scoops etc. Many of their supplies are from the popular US baking brand Wilton. With Halloween around the corner, check out some of the decorating ideas on the Wilton blog page.

I’m enamored by how cake artists use various tools to create such lovely patterns. Check out the cake stamps at the store that help add designs to fondant and buttercream cakes. They also have a small range of sugarcraft tools that help bakers create textures, designs, shapes, indents and ruffles on fondant.

If you are planning to make cookies to send to a school party, you might like their animal print cookie cutter designs. I thought they were adorable!

They have an entire aisle devoted to cake décor, with supplies ranging from sprinkles, edible décor icing, edible markers and metallic lustre dust. The edible food colour and flavours also find space on this aisle. Of course the raw ingredients like fondant, chocolate, all-purpose flour are all available.

I wouldn’t be able to tell if the supplies at the store are comprehensive enough for a pro baker. However, for novice bakers it seems like a good place to start. Hopefully, my next visit will be with an advanced baker!
