While hunting for quilling inspiration, I came across the works of Glenn Ricardo Rony who hails from Surabaya, Indonesia. He pursues quilling as a hobby, but has made some excellent designs showcased on his Instagram page. His love for animals and plants is reflected in his work, and on his page you will find flowers, leaves, squirrels, fruits, butterflies and the like.
Here’s a quick tete-a-tete with the guy himself.
What made you decide to become a quilling artist?
I took this up as a hobby five years ago, inspired by one of my Instagram friends and decided to pursue it along with my profession as an employee in a trucking company. Now, I am in love with paper quilling, paper cutting and paper sculpture.
Did you get trained somewhere?
No. I just watch and observe the works of others and create my own.
How long does it take to complete one piece of work?
It usually takes about 2-3 hours to complete a piece of work. I use tweezers, scissor and glue. Often I don’t use a quilling pen and roll with my fingers. When you use a quilling pen, the result is more wider paper curls. On the other hand, with hand rolling, the result is tighter curls.
What themes do you choose for quilling?
I love animals and plants so I decided to quill exotic animals like butterfly, gecko, dog, cat etc.
Any special paper that you use?
I use plain white paper about 180 to 280 GSM and glue my work till it is ready to be framed. I cut my paper strips myself using a cutter and cutting mat.
Any quilling artist that you admire?
A Turkish artist living in Lisbon. Her name is Sena Aruna.
