Thomas Ang is no celebrity photographer. However, he has done some decent wedding photography for his clients in Singapore. I met with him this week, in his rather eclectic studio, where he shares some interesting shots he has captured through his lens.
He goes by the name Peeping Thom Photography, and has been pursuing this as a business for five years, full-time. “Previously, it was mostly freelance assignments,” says Thomas. Like many talented photographers, Thomas never studied photography. He studied Multimedia Design in Singapore, but was influenced by a classmate to pursue photography. Prior to this, Thomas was a police officer!
We meet at his home studio, which you can tell, reflects his love for all things vintage!
More than his photographs, I really love the paper he chooses to print his photographs. He uses archival paper, which has such a nice texture and feel to it. It is a pleasant change from the glossy albums that many photographers make. Almost makes me want to go back and revisit my wedding album.
So besides the lovely look, the benefit of using archival paper is that it does not age over time. Thus, your old photographs will not have the yellowish look, common with many other photo papers.
Thomas prints the photographs in his studio. This gives him the advantage of controlling the colours in a photograph. “If there is a photograph which I do not like, I can edit and reprint it right away. Outsourcing printing does not allow you this flexibility,” he says.
Thomas is not hugely interested in marketing himself through wedding fairs. He prefers word of mouth marketing, which is more personal. Currently, he does two wedding shoots a month, but will be happy to take on board, more assignments.
He wants his photographs to be spontaneous, fun, real and unscripted. “I don’t always like the posed look,” he says. Nate Kaiser is a photographer whose work he loves and follows.
Some of his wedding shots are gorgeous. Here are a few that we love:
Besides wedding shoots, Thomas has also dabbled his hands in portraits, family and corporate shoots. To see his portfolio, check out his website: http://thepeepingthom.com
