The name ‘Plain Vanilla’ definitely does not do justice to this charming little bakery in Tiong Bahru, Singapore. The bakery is far from ‘plain vanilla’ and churns out some of the most delicious cupcakes in the city.
I was first drawn to this sweet haven while exploring the quaint Tiong Bahru neighborhood. Located in a quiet bylane, this bakery draws visitors by the dozen.
The evening that I visited, the bakery was filled with parents and bubs, young professionals on their laptops, and tourists looking for a spot to rest their feet. Late mornings are perhaps a better time to go, when the bakery has all the cupcake flavours laid out for the day.
I’ll admit, their cupcakes don’t boast of experimental flavours. They win hands down because they seem to get the basic flavours right. Whether it’s the dark chocolate ganache, salted caramel or Red Velvet, they are all so yummy that it’s hard to pinpoint a favourite. We’re told all the goodies are whisked up using the finest ingredients: Belgian chocolate, Madagascar Bourbon vanilla and French butter. They do some yummy tarts too!
The interiors are lovely too. The bicycles that line the café, the big wooden table for seating, or the old fashioned swing, all transport you to an era where glass buildings were not a way of life.
