During the school holidays, my daughter and I went to check out Playeum’s latest exhibit, ‘A World Full of Stories’. Playeum is a wonderful space in Singapore which organizes creative exhibits for children. I like how each installation is well planned, allowing kids to interact with art at their own pace. From glass painting, kinetic sand play, storytelling to imaginative play, kids have a whole lot to choose from.
We started at the story cubes, where kids can use different paper cutouts and magnets to weave their own stories. Attention spans are tiny at this age, and before I knew it, we are already at the next section – “the story raft” area. The kids mimicked life at sea, and I saw mermaids, pirates, captains and all sea-loving creatures. From the crowd around the ship wheel, I could tell kids seem to love pretend play.
If you want a quiet activity, the kinetic sand area is a good spot. I watch kids making little mountains with kinetic sand. The facilitators are great and help little ones come up with unique creations, without interfering too much. For little doodlers, painting on glass walls and scribbling on a giant chalkboard is a must.
The highlight of our visit was the story cave – a large cardboard structure where kids can speak through paper cups and sound tubes. I enjoyed watching Saira happily bring a stack of books from the reading corner and sit comfortably inside the cave. She enjoyed her glow-in-the-dark read-aloud session with the Playeum facilitators.
There is a permanent section devoted to ‘making art with scrap’. This section embodies Playem’s ethos – here children are encouraged to use recycled material to make objects. They also have a sewing machine and a toolbox in this section, where the older ones (under supervision) can learn how to cut wood and sew cloth.
All in all, I would say Playeum is the perfect place to take the kids out for a few hours, rain or shine.
