Sophisca, Singapore: Quirky candy

October 31, 2016 By: Preeti Khichacomment

At a recent Sassy Mama (a local magazine targeting mums) Halloween event, visitors were greeted with free chocolates and candy at the door. This was the first time I tasted chocolate from Taiwanese brand Sophisca. I never spotted this brand at my regular shopping trips. The packaging looked cool and quirky. I decided to go back to the brand’s store one morning, to learn more.

Hidden in a corner of the Marina Square shopping mall, the store can be hard to find. However, with playpen Pororo Park as its neighbor, the owners have probably done some thinking, before choosing the store location. Bursting with color, browsing through the store is fun. From chocolates, candies, gummies, chocolate paint, rock candy and chocolate medals, there is a enough to choose from.

However, Sophisca is not your traditional candy store just for kids. It has treats for adults as well.

On the shelves you will see everything from chocolate pads, doctor kits, stiletto heels all dressed up with chocolate. You know the kind of stuff you find at bachelor parties, hen nights and college birthdays. Adlena, the public relations consultant who handles the brand’s communication, claims the quirky collection is their ‘best seller’ in the Singapore store. Interesting!

I continue to browse. The ‘message box’ collection is another popular favorite among consumers. So, if you’re feeling weak in the knees, and looking to say it with chocolate, the boxes at Sophisca might give you a few ideas.

What really strikes me about the brand is their packaging. Bright, witty and fun-loving, the brand scores full points on that. Another selling point is that the chocolates and candy are individually packaged to maintain hygiene. “The brand draws inspiration from Japanese candy manufacturers who are very mindful of hygiene,” says Adlena.

I come home to try some of the chocolates and candy. Here’s my take: If you’re looking for chocolate that is light, less indulgent and goes down quickly like candy, Sophisca is a good bet. Don’t expect high-end decadence. The winning score really is their whimsical packaging.

Wishing you guys a super sweet Halloween!!
