Storytelling app: Steller

April 6, 2014 By: Preeti Khichacomment

Today, mobile phones are ubiquitous. I won’t deny it is my favorite companion too. It allows me to stay connected – be it on voice, instant message, or social media. But, what I treasure most are the memories that it stores, which I capture in bits and pieces through the phone camera.

Now imagine an app that allows you to give some meaning to the images that you record. That’s what Steller, the recently launched storytelling app created by the California based Mombo Labs, aims to do.

Developed by siblings Brian McAniff and Karen Poole, this app touts itself as a visual storytelling app that allows you to put together images to create stories.

They have some simple templates to play around with, including text and font options. I love the fact that you can create simple clean layouts, without going through the hassle of a photo-editing software!

Once you collate your photos to tell a story, you can add it to your Collection. Also, similar to Pinterest, you can follow other storytellers, and add their stories to your Collection. The app also allows you to share your story on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. And if you’re wondering why someone would choose Steller over say Instagram, its because you can use text, photos and videos – all in one story. Really, its another form of blogging, where you can put together your mobile photos, to tell a story.

The folks at Stella were kind enough to guide me through the features. I decided to create a digital scrapbook from my recent Singapore trip. I was delighted with the way it turned out. Check it out here, or click on the image below. The images are around the Central Business District area, where I spent many evenings in Singapore.

Kudos to Steller for allowing us to get creative with our photos. Though a few more features would definitely make the app ‘picture perfect’. For one, I wish it was compatible with the iPad, allowing me to create stories on a larger screen. Also a print option, where one can print a story would be useful. We hope to see these changes in the future!
